Inspire Therapy Overview
Inspire therapy is a small, fully implanted system that senses breathing patterns and delivers mild stimulation to maintain multilevel airway patency during sleep. Upper airway stimulation technology provides a first of its kind alternative for those suffering from obstructive sleep apnea who are unable to use or get consistent benefit from CPAP. The Inspire system consists of three implanted components, including a neurostimulator, a pressure sensing lead and stimulation lead, all controlled with the small handheld Inspire sleep remote. Thoughtful patient selection, targeted stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve, and optimal stimulation timing all play an important role in maintaining airway patency and improving patient outcomes.
Getting It Right
Inspire therapy is indicated for patients with the following characteristics: have moderate to severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) (AHI range from 15-65 with <25% central apneas), unable to use or get consistent benefit from positive airway pressure treatments such as CPAP, and free of complete concentric collapse of the airway at the soft palate. In addition, patients in the United States must be 22 years of age or older.? Inspire therapy has not been tested in people with BMI greater than 32.
The Inspire stimulation lead is designed to gently conform to a variety of hypoglossal (XII) nerve types. Securing the stimulation lead to the optimal location on the XII nerve facilitates stable, consistent stimulation of targeted airway muscles.
The Inspire Procedure
For most patients, the Inspire system can be implanted during an outpatient procedure. Patients may experience some pain and swelling at incision sites but should be able to return to non-strenuous activities after a few days. Approximately one month after implantation, patients return to their doctor’s office where the Inspire system is activated through a wireless connection, personalized stimulation settings are established and patients are trained to use the handheld sleep remote.
Why Choose Inspire therapy
Less invasive than conventional OSA surgeries and preserves the natural airway anatomy
Designed to maintain airway patency at multiple levels of the airway
Clinically proven to significantly reduce sleep apnea events and improve quality of life.
